My Pre / In / Post-Flight Skincare Routine

A huge huge hello from Hong Kong c:

I actually starting writing this post before i left but never had time to finish it between the end of my exams and leaving for HK.
I'm not a fan of flying, I actually really really dislike it. I get a little anxious planes. I don't know what it is, I'm not afraid of it, i just always feel unsettled and as a result i feel sick and I don't have an appetite so i don't end up eating much on the flight. Then there's the fact that i can't sleep planes! It's really exhausting for me and takes me days to recover ;c
I arrived this morning and i know, you guys are probably thinking WTF are you doing blogging, go out and shop and have a fabulous time?!! Well... multiple reasons really:
a.) I am sick. I woke up on the morning of my exam with a really sore throat and runny nose and after finishing my exam, i didn't have time to rest because i was super busy running last minute errands. Eventually i lost my voice the night of my flight and by the time i got to HK, I was feeling pretty rubbish
b.) It's been raining the whole day so i don't want to go out onto the streets anyway. I'm taking advantage of this rainy day by staying in and resting so i can get better and BE OUT AND ABOUT.
c.) I'm really sleepy but i don't want to nap coz otherwise i won't be able to sleep tonight so i thought i'd blog to stay awake c:
After i finish this post, I'm going to queue a post on my travel make up bag ^^ I love blogging stress free, ah i'm such a dag :3

I don't know about you guys but my skin condition and my self esteem have a very strong correlation LOL. When my skin doesn't feel great, i don't feel great so i try my best to make my skin happy c: I know i probably sound super OCD but i guess it's because before i really understood how to look after my skin, it suffered a lot ;c
That's why I thought I would just share with you my pre/in/post-flight skincare routine. My flight to HK is 9 hours. At that level of elevation, it is so incredibly dehydrating yet for some strange reason, i feel like my skin is oily/dirty at the same time...if that makes sense. It's just all round uncomfortable ;c So, this is how i get by!

Even before my flight, i prepare for the toll that flying does to the skin. The night before my flight, i always always use an overnight hydrating mask, just so my skin is at maximum hydration. My favorites are the Origins Drink Up Intensive Mask or the Laneige Water Sleeping Pack. The day of my flight, I take a hot shower and moisturize with a body lotion (i know you should do this everyday but I'm lazy when it comes to moisturizing the rest of my body). If i have time, after my shower, i chuck on a sheet mask for 15 minutes or so. Then i go on to prepare everything else for the flight and I usually only do my brows and concealer.

So after my plane takes off and i've settled in, I start by cleansing my face with my Bioderma Crealine H20. This is great because it's gentle, hydrating and you don't need to rinse it off after (when I'm at home, I always cleanse properly after removing my make up with this but since i didn't have much make up to begin with and I'm on a plane, this is much more convenient).
Then I pat Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream all over my face. I actually used to use the oil-free gel cream from Kiehls (review here) but lately with Melbourne's harsh winters, my skin has been a lot dryer than usual so i made the switch. Then, I pop on Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Eye Cream. This is my night eye cream and richer than my day eye cream so it's perfect for flights.
Afterwards, I proceed as i normally would and use my Origins Super Spot Remover on any current blemishes and my Kiehl's Dark Spot Corrector (the one i have is the sample size) on any acne scars. Throughout the flight, i make sure that i keep my lips and hands moisturized. Chapsticks and stuff do nothing for me at that altitude so i always take my best performing lip balm. I found this Natralus PawPaw Ointment sample in my sample box and i've loving it - I don't like Lucas Papaw Ointment so i didn't think i'd like this. My current favorite hand cream is from Swisse, it smells delightful and feels really soft ^^
When they turn down the aircraft lights, it's rest/snooze time. Since i can't sleep on flights this doesn't really make a difference for me but this is normally a few of hours into the flight. Around this time I put on an overnight hydrating mask and leave it on for the remainder of the flight. I have a bunch of samples of the actual night mask i use (Laneige Water Sleeping Pack) so i always take a packet with me on long flights. When i run out, i'll probably pack a little tub to take with me on board :3
So now i sit back and relax for the rest of the flight - I watch movies, flip through my magazine, nom, read, whatever and i make sure that i drink plenty of water throughout the flight.
Before we descend, I take out my Bioderma Crealine H20 again and i remove all the product i have on my face. Then i simply moisturize with my Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream again, follow up with my Origins Ginzing Eye Cream and do my brows and concealer.

After I land and finally get off the plane, I almost always make a restroom pit stop because
1.) I get really excited about ground toilets after having to go on plane toilets with flushes that sound like I'm going to get flushed out of the plane and
2.) I like to check what i look like in a big mirror just to make sure i don't look super trashed even if i feel that way - usually the case after any flight for me. So I freshen up with my Caudalie Beauty Elixir on the face and a little bit of perfume ^^
When i get to the place I'm staying, in this case, our apartment in HK, the first thing i do is take a nice shower and EXFOLIATE with my Cure Aqua Gel (review here). At this point, my skin is thanking me c:

I feel like this sounds like much harder work than it actually is, my in-flight skin routine takes me 5-10 minutes tops and i take my time massaging in my moisturizer and eye creams. Since I'm normally watching a movie while doing it anyway, I don't see it as a chore or anything. But then and again, i don't really see skincare as a chore. I really enjoy it and it feels so rewarding when i can see the effects ^^

Do you guys have a skincare routine when you have long flights? Do you guys think i'm crazy? Because i think i sound crazy but i promise I'm not :3 LOL

  1. Love this post! I'm not a frequent flyer - probably once every 1-2 years (although a bit more lately) so I haven't got a perfected routine. Moisturising is super important though! I try to sleep as much as I can on the flight because I do tend to get plane sickness so if I'm asleep I can avoid that.

    1. I think if the flight is short, the most important is just to moisturize, use eye cream and lip balm and of course drink water. You're lucky you can sleep on planes!

  2. Great skincare routine! I don't think you're crazy at all!
I'm surprised you didn't wear much makeup throughout the whole journey - ascending and descending.

    1. Yeh, i don't wear make up on planes coz i'm usually too lazy/got too much to do on the day of my actual flight (i always leave things last minute). Concealer and brows probably make the biggest difference in terms of brightening my face c:

  3. Love this post! Totally reminds me of Lisa Eldridge's video where she did her whole long haul flight routine - it was fascinating. I agree that skin care and keeping your skin hydrated throughout a flight is so important. I don't take as many products with me as you (but then again I really don't fly much) but I make sure some kind of facial towelette, rich cream and Avene Thermal Spray is in there (I'm not even 100% sure I'm allowed to sneak that in since it is an aerosol product LOL). Good idea to use a sheet mask during the flight - though people might look at me funny ahaha :p

    1. Ah i love Lisa Eldrirdge. Yeah, in all honesty, i think i probably could have lived without some of those products on my plane ride but like i said...i'm a little OCD when it comes to my skincare routine LOL
I love the Avene spray in summer, it feels so refreshing!! c:
I don't think i could use a sheet mask on the plane, i'd feel too self conscious LOL, maybe when everyone around me seem to be asleep...but otherwise that's why i use overnight masks instead :3

  4. Great post! First and foremost, welcome to Hong Kong! I hope you feel better soon and I agree the weather has been poorly... Too much rain! Probably cause it was way too hot the past week, so it's making up for the dryness by raining!

After reading your post, I feel extremely lazy about my skincare on board now haha! That's actually a good idea to use hydrating masks pre-flight, didn't think of that! And you remind me to use more skincare once I'm actually on board! Do you apply the products in your seat or bathroom? I get quite self conscious "pampering" myself in front of others haha.

The Caudalie Beauty Elixir is also perfect for on-the-go occasions like flying! Reminds me I need to get another bottle!

    1. Thank you so much sweetie! I hope i get better asap so i can get out and have fun!!
I don't think ALL of these products are completely necessary if you want to bring the absolute minimum. If i were to choose 3 things here i'd probably just make sure i bring moisturizer, eye cream and lip balm!
I usually apply it in my seat because i'm really afraid of plane toilets... (irrational i know LOL). I just do it in my seat
I love the beauty elixir but honestly i don't know if i love it enough to buy another bottle because it's quite pricey!

  5. You really have your routine down pat! I bought the Origins mask to take on the plane with me- though tbh it's so large and you only need a tiny bit, it's still so full like it's brand new. I ordered the Caudalie Beauty Elixir and I can see why Lisa Eldridge uses it to calm herself on flights but I use it up so quickly! I've only had a few weeks and it's almost all gone. Does the Kiehl's Dark Spot Corrector work?

    1. If my product is too big to take onto the flight, i normally buy tiny travel size tubs from shops like Daiso or Muji and i put it in that c: I love that origins mask but the smell is a little too sweet for my liking.
My beauty elixir went pretty fast too, so i'm not sure if i should buy another bottle because it's quite expensive :x
I'm still trying out the dark spot corrector, this was a sample given to me.

  7. I enjoyed reading this flight routine, it makes me want to go on a holiday too haha :P The Laneige Water Sleeping Pack would be perfect for flights as it hydrates so well! Aww I really want to get a hold of a mini Bioderma Crealine sample bottle as my 500mL bottle isn't very travel friendly! Mini sized products are so adorable... as well as being great to take while travelling :)
